My fitness journey over the past seven years has been about goal setting. When I started working out with Jeff, I told him that I wished I could run but I didn’t see myself ever doing it because I was afraid of hurting myself and I was afraid of what I’d look like in my bigger clothes and trying not to imitate Phoebe’s run from that infamous Friends episode. I never ever thought that saying that wish out loud would turn into 5ks, 10ks, half marathons, trails runs and races, Spartan races…
Every time I finished a big race or training block, Jeff would tell me to set a new goal. I made goals about improving my time and my distance but each time I had to think of a goal, I would sit there stumped for a while. This morning, I had to share my goals with him while he shared his goal for me. He wants me to run a trail run that is a minimum of a 10k so I said I will do it this August. I’ve done a few 10K distanced runs on the trails with him and I figure I am game to up the distance…within reason, of course! He also put it out there, something I actually thought of for myself a while back as a goal for 2021 and that is to surpass my fastest 5K. I said I’m game for that and I will do it by the end of July. He will come up with a training plan for me and I have some runs that I found online that will help me on those speed interval days so I think this is going to be a good thing.
I did discuss a goal of mine and that is practice relaxation/mindfulness for a few minutes every day. I tend to stress or overthink things that I can’t control and I tend to overworry about the small stuff so I want to make a real effort to take a few minutes every day to stop whatever I am doing and stretch/lay still/whatever is needed to get into the so called Zen zone. Looking forward to letting you all know how this all goes.
